  • Tiltrotator not convinced

    Hi All
Am I the only person not convinced that this bit of kit is all it is cracked up to be ? I have not had a chance to try one yet so i accept my scepticism may be misplaced but the cost seems to be prohibitive for general hire . Customers I work for want to pay as little as possible for the machine so if I bought one it would be more a toy for me than a way of getting more revenue. I used to work as an owner op in the south of England some years ago. I had some good hires with various rubber ducks and tilting buckets . I then bought a 788 case with an offset boom. It cost me more to buy and was good for some jobs but I never got a penny more than I had done with the good old tilty. I suppose I came to the conclusion that if your a good op you don't need all the toys to hold hire.

But if you had one .. it would improve your output, thereby making you more worthy to your customer ? So he wont quibble about your fee

I have been considering an Engecon one for a while .. and I am lining up a couple of jobs where it would be usefull simply because it would help me complete a contract faster, so free me up sooner for work elsewhere

Its definately a specialist item for more experienced drivers (of which you sound) .. but I wouldnt rule it out fella HTH
Please don't PM me for plant advice.. thanks .. Post in the forum where I will gladly help, as will many of our contributors.. as the info and responses will help everyone else, which is why we exist

      Hi Muz

One thing I didn't say was that I assume that they suit some types and size of machine more than others . What size of machine are they mostly fitted too ?

What machine are you considering fitting it too ?

I dont see it that way ? why do you think some sizes are not suitable ?

Hey Vin I have used one in the past and I agree the price is high but it is an attachment truly for specialist work. The company I was working for had one fitted to a Kobelco five tonner and got it fitted so they could use it for golf course work. I really liked using it for the most part, but there were quite a few jobs that I could of done just as easily without. Most of the work that company did was priced work so it was a little easier for them to justify buying it, it was also fairly robust as some of those guys could be a little forgetful in the greasing department .

The bigger the machine is the less likely you will be doing finesse work . 13 tonne plus you are generally bulking , not much point in one for loading dump trucks . What size machine are you considering one for Muz?

              Hi 245
i think I agree with what you say , it is only justifiable if you are doing specialist work other wise for general hire it is cost prohibitive. Also I think 5 to 7 tonne is probably optimum size .

I think more likely 3 to 14 tonne, including wheel excavators or ducks. You don't see many of them on this side of the pond, but I do think I'll see more of them in coming future. I also believe they are something that's only meant for experienced operators and somebody that takes pride in his machine.

I get you funilly enough it was going to be a 5 or 8 .. but I also saw it as an attachment to be dropped off when not required because the wear would be fearsome for such an expensive attachment for mass digging work

I agree, because the variable digging geometry would only be useful to those who truly understand how to use their machine

Some of those tilt rotators have some fantastic features such as being able to drop the tilt-rotator itself from the cab without having to undo any hoses or electrical or basically the Oilquick system.

Do a google on Eddiebackblade, KH080 wideboy , Moorlands Specialist Excavations Ltd ,
                      http://www.theconstructionindex.co.u...80-3-in-action

You might change your minds. Given the work load (if I ever see it again ) I seriously consider one...............

I have seen that thread .. but its also about a wide track conversion .. with a winch .. so somewhat a specialist tool to say the least

                          Hi stock

i can see it would make this type of work easier for the operator, less thought required to organize machine positioning in order to pull the batters maybe quicker too .
Do owners charge for engcons as an addition to hire rate on the same basis as a breaker ?

I`m not an operator so can`t really say whether it`s justified one way or the other in regard to whether it makes a major difference to carrying out a job.
I`ve seen Eddies thread on the other forum but again only he will know if what he`s invested in his machine to allow him to target certain customers gives a reasonable return on his investment or not.
It seems a very specialised setup he has,so one wonders what percentage of available work will pay extra for a similar setup,my feeling is for most people there will not be anything extra.
Can I ask as part of this thread, and forgetting rotators for a minute,do you guys think there is a market for small tilting buckets? I`m thinking 1.1/2 tonne and 2.1/2 tonne.
If an administrator wants me to start a new thread for this question, please delete this.

Anyone look at AF decom site? I see some of the bigger Scandinavian Civil contractors are using them quite extensively in their fleets...
