Resurrecting this thread with (I hope!) the answer to the problem.
I decided on the "Let It Develop" approach and just lived with the erratic starting and the warning lights occasionally going haywire, none of which seemed to affect the basic operation of the machine.
But nothing really developed . . . . until recently.

I arranged for the machine to be serviced on site (basic oil and filter changes etc) and mentioned the problem to the engineer. He noted that the coded immobiliser that was fitted to the machine was an 'after market' addition and not a Volvo original part and said that he'd experienced problems with such units before. So, on the basis that the machine never leaves my smallholding and is kept out of sight in a locked building, I asked him to remove the unit - which he duly did.

Since then I've not had any starting problems and the warning lights are behaving themselves. It has only been a few weeks so perhaps early days but even so I've alredy noticed the difference and am pretty confident that the problem has finally been sorted.
