    Aaron Morby | Thu 1st September |
One of the country’s oldest building firms has collapsed after parent company Headcrown Group decided to stop supporting the company.
Browns Construction Group, which was established just over 150 years ago, was placed in administration yesterday with around a dozen of the 20 staff axed.Begbies’ Paul Stanley told the Manchester Evening News that work on Browns’ current contracts would be halted. The present orderbook includes converting a school near Matlock, Derbyshire, into retirement flats, a hotel in Dartmouth, a scheme at Cardiff University. The firm was also building several homes in the Wilmslow area. The business is believed to have collapsed with liabilities of around £5m.The firm has been in trouble for some time in July Headcrown, which bought the old-established brand in 1985, cut overheads by closing Browns’ offices at the Cheadle Royal Business Park, near Stockport and moving back office functions to its other building company Cruden Group. The builder, which was widely known as Brown’s of Wilmslow, specialised in a full mix of new build and refurbishment schemes from retail and residential to healthcare and education.Eight staff have been retained to try to recoup monies owed following the completion of contracts.
