SH Structures wins giant steel horses heads order

    Aaron Morby

North Yorkshire based steelwork contractor SH Structures has ridden off with the contract to fabricate giant steel horses heads, known as the Kelpies.
The two 30-metre high Kelpies, the name for a mythical Scottish water horse, are being created by sculptor Andy Scott as part of the Helix Project in Scotland.
As part of the £43m project Balfour Beatty is building new culverts to extend the Forth and Clyde canal under the M9 motorway and building a new sea lock.
This new Kelpie lock will link directly into the existing Carron mooring basin. One of the Kelpies will move to displace the water required to operate the canal lock

Atkins designed the steelwork for the 100m Kelpies created by Sculptor Andy Scott

The canal system was first brought back to the world’s attention with construction of the Falkirk Wheel lift, which ranks as one of the great UK engineering projects of the last decade.
