Bridge slides over live railway for Nottingham tram

Dutch heavylift specialist Mammoet has completed the launch of an 1100-tonne steel bridge over a live railway on the Nottingham Express Transit (NET) project.

The bridge will carry trams over the newly revamped Nottingham Station when the new tramlines open next year.
The work is part of the £570m NET phase two project to extend the network 17.5km to the south and southwest of the city.
Mammoet was working for steelwork subcontractor Cleveland Bridge, which in turn was working for main contractor joint venture Taylor Woodrow Alstom (TWA). Turner & Townsend is providing project management and technical advice to client Nottingham City Council.
At 104m long and 14.5m wide, the bridge took several weeks to move into position, using precision engineering techniques to slide the bridge up to 13m per night, using a hydraulic push-pull system. This was all done with the railway and adjacent highways remaining fully operational throughout.
Alan Renfree, assistant director at Turner & Townsend Nottingham and leader of the company’s team at Nottingham City Council’s NET office, said: “After many years of extensive planning and close coordination with the many partners involved, including Network Rail and East Midlands Trains, on both the design and construction methodology, it is fantastic to now see the bridge maneuvered into position.

A driven man with a burning passion.
