Wacker do a dual power 1 ton digger, you can use the machine as a std diesel machine or a zero emission machine driven through an electric driven power pack,, so in the work area the machine could be powered by its diesel engine or by remote electric motor / power pack ( the best of both worlds ) & no complicated electronic systems.

Makes me think of R.G. Letourneau's early creations but he used rack and pinion actuators to make his machines move but he was someone that didn't like hydraulic systems as he found them leaky and messy, so everything he built was diesel electric. This obviously didn't last after he passed away and his company started producing large diesel electric wheel loaders, but with hydraulic actuation. I myself have wondered what the future of excavating holds especially considering that a hydraulic leak in the wrong place like salmon spawning grounds could cost a contractor everything.
