I did see a mention of that, and that the DD engines weren't compatible with the Volvo starters.

I can count the teeth on my flywheel and starter, no problem. Do you recall how many teeth I should have?

If this is mechanical, I feel it's down to wear on the ring gear. The starter itself appears fine.

After this, I'm going to have another look at the wiring diagrams. I see there's a connection to the ECU from the starter relay/solenoid, I'm not sure what this is for.

Once the engine is back together, I'll start/stop it a few hundred times to try and recreate the issue. If I can, and the machine keeps running with the key out, I'll pull the starter relay to see if that stops it. If it doesn't, I'll unplug the ECU.

My belief is that with the ignition off, the stop solenoid remains powered on it's pull/start coil. Regardless of cause, this has to be the case, since otherwise the engine would stop with the key removed.
